BOOK YOUR REMOVALIST

Get three quotes and then book a removalist for the date of the move. If you have a friend who has moved recently, ask them who they used to move as ‘word of mouth’ can be a great recommendation. Check with your apartment manager to schedule the move and find out if you need any permits for the moving truck.

FOUR WEEKS OUT FROM THE MOVE

  • If you are relocating for compulsory work reasons, ask your company to reimburse you for at least part or all of the cost involved.
  • If you are buying another house for your family go for a trip to the new state with the purpose of checking out the best suburbs and schools. Taking a couple of days to do this ensures that you don’t move to the wrong area and you will know where to buy the house.
  • Make sure your new area is a safe neighborhood.
  • Check transport links and public transport options. Even though you are probably driving, your kids will be on public transport to school.
  • Visit your new work so that you will be ready to walk straight in when the time comes.
  • If you haven’t already got a house to go to, firm up on a rental property in the suburb you want to relocate. This is a good idea, as it will get you u the area, and you will soon know whether you like it or not. Register with several realtors so that they can let you know when a suitable house comes up.
  • When you are a professional, you need to be sure that you are licensed to practice.
  • Choose a removalist.
  • Throw out all your really old stuff, it is a good chance to make changes.
  • Make full lists of what is going with you and ask the removalist to bring around the boxes. Keep a list denoting each room.
  • Because moving is expensive, it is not economic to take everything! It may be time for a new bed! Remove old furniture and give it to charity shops.
  • Get your insurances in order, ask your chosen removalist to bring over the boxes, tape, and paper.
  • If you are doing the packing yourself you need plenty of time to pack everything at least 4 weeks is a good lead-in, one room a week.

Moving can be a challenge, but the better organized you are the easier it will be for you and your family. Small children don’t always handle moving well and it may be better to send them to Grandma for a week while you do the move and get the house in order, send the dog too, as pets find a move stressful.
